Earl Stonham enjoyed their outing to Easton Cricket Club, not least for their impressive victory but for the delightful trip to a most attractive
village on a glorious day. A strong wind was the only factor and the cooling influence would create a chill later in the day for the fielding team.
Earl Stonham won the toss and elected to bat. With Rob ‘not so past it afterall’ Wrinch and young Bob Wrinch bolstering the batting and bowling
line-up respectively, confidence in setting a good target was high on a dry wicket offering little bounce.
The opening partnership of Rob Wrinch and Ed Player set Stonham off to a steady start, with both batsman looking comfortable against Easton’s opening bowlers. After some good
fortune and around 10 overs behind them Wrinch in particular let loose with an array of shots resulting in a total of twelves 4s and four 6s.
Providing solid support Ed Player also contributed a stunning 6 teasing the fielder at straight long on. Despite a quick succession of wickets the support role to
Wrinch was continued with Stephen Lewis adding a quick 42 to the score. With overs to spare the eventual loss of Wrinch for 123 allowed Easton
to prevent a Stonham flourish to the high 200s. A young bowling attack from Easton showed a great deal of promise with Beezer, the most
impressive, achieving figures of 2 for 34 off 10 overs. The ball, for all but the odd surprise, was keeping low and all-rounder
Fiske, who bowled a short tricky spell, was unfortunate not to pick up a wicket.
With the target set at 267 to win, Easton began their innings patiently, although without a great deal of confidence. King, who had bowled
7 overs and taken 1 of the 6 Stonham wickets looked set for a half century before being bowled by a ripper off young Bob. Charlie Tunstall had
a consistent spell of bowling that offered few runs to the home team. Easton were unable to take advantage of Tom Prior’s first spell, struggling
to pick the slower pace but it was the turn of Tunstall to take the early wickets. Jeff Lewis bowled a straight spell of 13 overs, resulting in
economic figures and a wicket although D Palmer's 6 into the neighbouring field pricked the ears up of all watching. Stephen Lewis dutifully carried
on where his batting had left-off with largely accurate bowling taking the wicket of an aggressive innings from the young all-rounder Fiske, who
impressed with an aggressive and resilient 26 before being caught at long off by a back-stepping Prior.
With the target far from reach, light and bonus points caused the most concern to the fielding team... and a chilly wind. S Lewis took the final
wicket with a steady head, Easton all out for 149 from 43.4 overs.
